Willow Springs - 1966 - Lee Herbert meets his next team partner
A press photo from Willow Springs in 1966 captures Datsun 1500 G Production racer Lee Herbert failing to avoid the spinning Dan Parkinson in his H Sports Racing Dolphin. Ed Barker, Lee's closest rival in the Southern Pacific Division, follows in the Triumph Spitfire. Lee would finish second to Ed Barker in the Division that year, and both would post a DNF at that year's American Road Race of Champions (ARRC) at Riverside.
Dan Parkinson 's Dolphin only suffered bodywork damage, and it was repaired soon after. Dan went on to win his third and fourth national championships at that year's ARRC, at the wheel of the Dophin and his D Sedan Abarth. His quest to win three crowns in 1966 (and his 5th overall) in his D Sports Racing Lotus-Climax failed at the last hurdle because of mechanical problems.
All was soon to change for Dan with the lure of Nissan/Datsun factory support and prize money. Before the following race season he would join Lee to race Datsun 1600 Roadsters for Duane Feuerhelm's west coast factory Datsun Racing Team.
