"WIN IN A DATSUN - but, be sure and let us know"
September 1968 - The above advertisement appeared in the September '68's issue of the SCCA's Sports Car magazine, when Datsuns were winning on race tracks across the USA. Nissan was now taking competition seriously, supporting successful drivers financially and producing its first competition manual to help owner/drivers put their 1500, 1600 and 2000 roadsters on the track - and keep them there, running as fast as possible ...
PR was key to selling cars and although Nissan followed the fortunes of Duane Feuerhelm's Datsun Racing Team on the West Coast and Bob Sharp Racing on the East coast, there were numerous victories across the USA that would have gone unnoticed without the help of dealers and the drivers themselves.
This advertisement prompted many drivers to contact Nissan. Within days, news of their their exploits would appear in one of the numerous Datsun Racing News releases forwarded to the regional press. These releases achieved valuable coverage and helped to raise Nissan/Datsun's profile, helping its day-to-day business of selling private cars and trucks. The press releases themselves are now rare and highly collectible.
The image was kindly provided by Roger Loop, and is reproduced courtesy of the SCCA - The artwork was used in other Datsun advertising and race bulletins as well as the SCCA's own race posters. See the November 2001 'Image of the Month' for further information.
