1968 Tulip Rally - Jorma Lusenius and Klaus Lehto on their way to 1st in class and 3rd in Group 3.
After the works Datsun Fairlady 2000s turned in an encouraging result in the 1968 Monte Carlo Rally, with Hannu Mikkola placing 9th overall, the team went on to that year's Tulip Rally. Here, the low-windshield Solex roadsters perfomed well against a strong field. Although Mikkola featured well in the opening stages, Jorma Lusenius eventually outperformed him, overturning the Monte result. Lusenius and Lehto eventually finished 1st in class and 3rd in Group 3, while Mikkola finished 5th in Group 3. The results gave Nissan further encouragement, leading them to prepare a team of high windshield cars for Europe the following year. On a flight after the 1968 Tulip Rally, however, Ford, the overall winners, poached Mikkola as a factory driver for its Escort Twin Cams.
